I wonder why Hitchcock didn’t continue to work with Cotton after ‘Under Capricorn’; his performance in ‘Shadow of a Doubt’ really helps anchor that film. What if Cotton had been cast, for example, in one of Jimmy Stewart’s roles in ‘The Man Who Knew Too Much’ or ‘Rear Window’?

I have to admit, one of my favorite Cotton appearances in in Orson Welles’ ‘Touch of Evil,’ as the mustached fellow laconically commenting on what’s left of a man caught in an explosion. You almost don’t recognize him at first — and then that Voice grabs you…
