Stanley Motss: I’m in show business, yes? Why come to me?
Conrad ‘Connie’ Brean: I’ll tell you why. “54, 40, or fight.” What does that mean?
Stanley Motss: It’s a slogan.
Conrad ‘Connie’ Brean: “Remember the Maine.” “Tippecanoe and Tyler, too.” They’re war slogans. We remember the slogans, not the wars. You know why? That’s show business. That’s why we’re here. Naked girl, covered in napalm. “V” for victory. Five Marines raising the flag, Mount Surabachi. You remember the picture in 50 years, but forget the war. The Gulf War, smart bomb falling down a chimney. 2,500 missions a day, 100 days. One video of one bomb. The American people bought that war. War is show business. That’s why we’re here.
Garland Greene: Two went down, one came up.
Cameron Poe: Wasn’t my fault.
Garland Greene: Well, you don’t have to tell me. Most murders are crimes of necessity rather than desire. But the great ones, Dahmer, Gacy, Bundy. . .they did it because it excited them.
Cameron Poe: Don’t you. . .I got nothing in common with them, with you. Don’t you talk to me! They were insane.
Garland Greene: Now you’re talking semantics. What if I told you insane was working 50 hours a week in some office for 50 years at the end of which they tell you to piss off, ending up in some retirement village hoping to die before suffering the indignity of trying to make it to the toilet on time? Wouldn’t you consider that to be insane?
Cameron Poe: Murdering 30 people, semantics or not, is insane!
Garland Greene: One girl. . .I drove through three states wearing her head as a hat.
Cameron Poe: It’s my daughter’s birthday today. So please feel free not to share everything with me.
This was one of my favorite films when it first came out and it remains one of my favorite films to date. Actually, 1997 is one of my favorite years for film and I would be hard-pressed to pick a favorite of the five films that were up for Oscar’s top prize that year. Good Will Hunting was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning two: Best Original Score Danny Elfman, Best Original Song “Miss Misery” by Elliott Smith, Best Film Editing, Best Supporting Actress Minnie Driver, Best Supporting Actor Robin Williams (won), Best Actor Matt Damon, Best Original Screenplay Matt Damon and Ben Affleck (won), Best Director Gus Van Sant and Best Picture. The other films up for Best Picture that year were As Good As It Gets, The Full Monty, L.A. Confidential and winner Titanic.
Johnny Rico: I want to join up. I think I’ve got what it takes to be a Citizen.
Jean Rasczak: Good for you. Go find out.
Johnny Rico: Well, my parents are against it. And I know it’s my choice. I was wondering, what would you do, if you were me ?
Jean Rasczak: Figuring things out for yourself is the only freedom that anyone really has. Use that freedom. Make up your own mind, Rico.
Dirk: Please, just don’t be mean to me!
Dirk’s Mother: I’m not being mean, you’re just too stupid to see it!
Dirk: You don’t know what I can do! You don’t know what I can do, what I’m gonna do, or what I’m gonna be! I’m good! I have good things and you don’t know about! I’m gonna be something! I am! And don’t fucking tell me I’m not!
