Female Filmmaker Friday: The Bride Wore Red, 1937 (dir. Dorothy Arzner)

I’ve been watching my way through Joan Crawford’s filmography (I’m at 57 I think now!) and finally was able to watch this gem from, at the time, the only female director in Hollywood: Dorothy Arzner. The one review I could find of the film from its initial release is not too generous, but I have to say I absolutely loved this film.

Narrator: Happy the man, and happy he alone, he who can call today his own. He who, secure within, can say, Tomorrow, do thy worst, for I have lived Today.

Big Joe: My boy, let me give you a little piece of advice. If you’re going to pull a gun on somebody, which happens from time to time in these parts, you better fire it about a half a second after you do it. . .because most men aren’t as patient as I am.

Movie Quote of the Day – F For Fake, 1973 (dir. Orson Welles)

Orson Welles: Our works in stone, in paint, in print, are spared, some of them, for a few decades or a millennium or two, but everything must finally fall in war, or wear away into the ultimate and universal ash – the triumphs, the frauds, the treasures and the fakes. A fact of life: we’re going to die. “Be of good heart,” cry the dead artists out of the living past. “Our songs will all be silenced, but what of it? Go on singing.” Maybe a man’s name doesn’t matter all that much.
