Heathcliff: What do they know of Heaven or Hell, Cathy, who know nothing of life? Oh, they’re paying for you, Cathy. I’ll pray one prayer with them. I’ll repeat until my tongue stiffens. Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest so long as I live on! I killed you. Haunt me, then! Haunt your murderer! I know that ghosts have wandered on the Earth. Be with me always. Take any form, drive me mad, only do not leave me in this dark alone where I cannot find you. I cannot live without my life! I cannot die without my soul.
Danny: What’s that? Like the sound of a big wall falling over into the sea. Everything’s slipping out from under me. Can’t you feel it? Starting in slow, then hundreds of miles an hour. There’s a wind in my ears, a terrible rushing wind. Everything’s going past me like telegraph poles! Everything’s going backwards! Everything I’ve ever seen! Faster and faster, back to the day I was born! I could see it coming — the day I was born! I’m going to die.
Jack Wyatt: How would you like to be on a television show? Ms. . .
Isabel Bigelow: Bigelow.
Jack Wyatt: Bigelow?
Isabel Bigelow: Isabel Bigelow.
Jack Wyatt: What do you think? Wanna be a famous actress?
Isabel Bigelow: Me?
Jack Wyatt: Yeah.
Isabel Bigelow: An actress?
Jack Wyatt: Yeah.
Isabel Bigelow: I can’t act.
Jack Wyatt: Anyone can act. If I can act, you can act.
Book Soup Cafe Waitress: Amen.
Jack Wyatt: I think those people over there just finished their plate of *hummus*. You might wanna help them by clearing it. Thank you.
George: Why don’t you tell them the truth! Why don’t you tell them we’re a million miles from civilization with no chance of getting out of here alive. It’s slow starvation, that’s what it is! A slow horrible death!
Gloria: [Hysterical laughter] Well, that’s perfect. Just perfect. What a kick I’m going to get out of this. A year ago, a doctor gave me six months to live — that was a year ago! I’m already six months to the good. I’m on velvet! I haven’t got a thing to lose! But you, you the noble animals of the human race, what a kick I’m going to get out of watching you squirm for a change! What a kick! [Hysterical laughter]
In honor of director Jane Campion being the head of this year’s Cannes Film Festival jury and this film’s five-year anniversary (it premiered at Cannes on May 15th, 2009), I decided I would finally write about Bright Star. I love this movie so dearly that I know I won’t be able to cover everything that I love about it (I could write a whole book!), so instead I have picked out a few of my favorite moments from the film.
Glenn Morley: She doesn’t know anything about politics. How can she, I ask you, be expected to give of such things as the minimum wage bill, the full employment bill, the Missouri Valley, the Columbia Valley authorities amendments, the permanent MBPC, atomic bomb control, poll tax, national. . ., well a hundred other things.
Katrin Holstrom: Can you?
Glenn Morley: That’s beside the point. I am already a congressman.
