Precursors Chart and Some Frontrunners

It’s that time in Awards Season wherein I start maintaining a Precursors Chart, a handy chart that lets you know what films have won what awards. So far the char only has the Washington D.C. Film Critics, National Board of Review and Hollywood Film Award winners. But I’ll update it once a week or so as the various critics associations and guilds announce their winners.

So far the main frontrunners are The Social Network for picture, director and adapted screenplay, Christian Bale in The Fighter for supporting actor and Toy Story 3 for animated film. The rest of the categories are still pretty spread out, although we do have a pretty good look at possible nominees.

Movie Quote of the Day – ‘Crocodile’ Dundee, 1986 (dir. Peter Faiman)

Sue Charlton: He’s got a knife.
Michael J. “Crocodile” Dundee: [chuckles] That’s not a knife.
[he pulls out a large bowie knife]
Michael J. “Crocodile” Dundee: Now THAT’s a knife.

“Blue Valentine” Wins Appeal, Gets R Rating!

According to TheCarpetBagger the Weinstein Co won their appeal to the MPAA by a unanimous vote.

The film, which stars Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 21st.

Movie Quote of the Day – Hope Floats, 1998 (dir. Forest Whitaker)

Bernice Pruitt: My dad says that childhood is the happiest time of my life. But, I think he’s wrong. I think my mom’s right. She says that…
[Bernice’s voice fades as Birdee takes over]
Birdee Pruitt: [laughing] Childhood is what you spend the rest of your life trying to overcome. That’s what momma always says.

Movie Quote of the Day – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, 1975 (dir. Miloš Forman)

McMurphy: What do you think you are, for Christ’s sake, crazy or somethin’? Well you’re not! You’re not! You’re no crazier than the average asshole out walkin’ around on the streets and that’s it.

New International Poster For “Black Swan”

From what I hear, Natalie Portman’s performance in this film is nothing short of extraordinary. I am simply dying to see it. Really love this new poster.

Oscar Vault Monday – Heaven Can Wait, 1978 (dir. Warren Beatty, Buck Henry)

Heaven Can Wait is one of my favorite romantic comedies, though I don’t really want to box it into that genre. It’s more than just a run-of-the-mill rom-com. It’s a meditation on life and love and the pursuit of happiness. It’s also a little bit sci-fi and a little bit sports. Basically, it’s a mix of a lot of great things all in one perfect 101 min film. It lost to The Deer Hunter and I’m not even going to try to argue that that was the wrong choice, because I don’t think it was. The Deer Hunter was definitely the right choice; I just really love Heaven Can Wait and feel like not nearly enough people have seen it. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction (won), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor Jack Warden, Best Supporting Actress Dyan Cannon, Best Actor Warren Beatty, Best Director and Best Picture. It was up against Coming Home, Midnight Express, An Unmarried Woman and winner The Deer Hunter.

Movie Quote of the Day – Only You, 1994 (dir. Norman Jewison)

Faith Corvatch: How could you do this to me?
Peter: Because I’m in love with you!
Faith Corvatch: Ha! What kind of an excuse is that?

“The Social Network” Named Best Film By The Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association

Seems like David Fincher’s film is picking up lots of momentum as Awards Season is beginning. The question is whether it can keep it up all the way through Oscar night. The Town won Best Ensemble again. Makes me wonder if it’ll get a SAG nomination. Sure looks like it.
