“Somewhere”, “Never Let Me Go” trailers

Rewatching the trailer for The American reminded me that in the last two days trailers have gone online for two other films I’m looking forward to this year: Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere and Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go.

Somewhere stars Stephen Dorff as a wayward Hollywood star whose life gets turned upside by a visit from his daughter played Elle Fanning. I also hear Benicio Del Toro has at the very least a cameo.

I think the trailer is adorable, but it may seem a bit too, dare I say it, hipstery for some. Either way it has the potential for greatness. It’s being released in late December, so Focus Features is definitely going to push it this Oscar season.

Never Let Me Go is based on the highly acclaimed novel of the same name by Kazu Ishiguro and stars Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley, Sally Hawkins and Charlotte Rampling.

Fox Searchlight is releasing the film in limited release in October. This could mean the film could go either way when it comes to awards season. It’s a little peculiar to release it in limited only and not have plans (so far) for a wider release when it’s based on such a popular novel. I think it might be partly because it’s a British film and partly because the story (I won’t spoil it here) is a little odd and Fox Searchlight is not sure if film audiences will take to it the way readers did the book. I guess we’ll see.
