Movie Quote of the Day – Hable con ella (Talk To Her), 2002 (dir. Pedro Almodóvar)

Benigno: Talk to her. Tell her that.
Marco: I’d like to but she can’t hear me.
Benigno: Why are you so sure about that?
Marco: Because her brain is turned off.
Benigno: A woman’s brain is a mystery, and in this state even more so. You have to pay attention to women, talk to them, be thoughtful occasionally. Caress them. Remember they exist, they’re alive and they matter to us. That’s the only therapy. I know from experience.

  1. I’ve never seen this film. I think I need to add this to my “need to see” list.

  2. Given that I’m gearing up for this year’s TIFF, it brings a huge smile to my face that you posted this exchange from this film…as it brings me back to my first year of doing TIFF proper in 2002.

This was one of the best things I saw this year, and the final push for me into being a lover of foreign films. It’s truly heartbreaking to watch these two men and how they search their hearts for the right way to love the women that they do…and even more heartbreaking when we find out how misguided one particular character in this film really is.

It’s one of the best films of the last decade, and will always remind me of when I took the final plunge into becoming the film geek I am today.

    Great call!

    • So jealous you’ll be going to TIFF! I’ve never been to a film festival and I’d really love to some day. This is my favorite Almodóvar and one of my 100 all-time favorite films. I love everything about it, even how flawed the characters are. Almodóvar’s a genius.

      • It’s my favorite Almodovar as well – which is a tough call to make when one also considers ALL ABOUT MY MOTHER, VOLVER, and WOMAN ON THE VERGE!

You should come up for TIFF some year – if not, chase down a film festival out there in Cali.
