Movie Quote of the Day – Shallow Hal, 2001 (dir. Bobby Farrelly, Peter Farrelly)

Hal: Let me ask you something. Who is the all-time love of your life?
Mauricio: [ponders] Wonder Woman.
Hal: Okay. . .let’s say Wonder Woman falls in love with you. And everyone else in the world didn’t find her attractive.
Mauricio: It wouldn’t matter. Because I know they’d be wrong.
Hal: See! That’s what I had with Rosemary! I saw a knockout, I don’t care what anybody else saw!
Mauricio: I hadn’t thought about it that way. I guess I really did screw you, huh?

  1. My favorite part of Farrelly Brothers films is they try very hard to explain WHY the main character has the personality they do, to keep them from being hateful. Here, as a child, Hal is told by his grandfather, with his dying breath, yet, that physical beauty is all that’s important in a woman. Bad advice, obviously, but at that age, in such an emotional situation, those words burrow straight to his lizard brain and STAY there.

Similarly in Fever Pitch, Fallon’s character uses the Sox to fill the sadness over his move to another town, and represents his love for his uncle. So there’s a real, emotional reason for his love of the team, and it makes the craziness at least understandable.

For gross-out comedies, they have more than a fair amount of heart.
