2013 in Films: A 565 New-To-Me Films Year-End Recap

A lot happened this year for me. I got my first full-time job, I moved to Los Angeles, I graduated from grad school. During all of this, I also managed to watch a lot of films. Pictured below is about six-months worth of movie watching ticket stubs. This is everything I’ve seen in theaters since I moved to Los Angeles. I’m not sure where all the tickets are from the first half of the year. I’m assuming they’re in a box somewhere, but you can use your imagination and figure out what it would look like if I had those as well.

So what film stood out above all these films as a life-long favorite for years to come? That would be none other than 1986’s Modern Girls.

I couldn’t find a trailer for the film on YouTube (though, you can watch the entire film there; you didn’t hear that from me!), so here’s a music video for Depeche Mode’s But Not Tonight, which is basically a trailer for the film. Siskel and Ebert hated this film and gave it two thumbs down (that’s on YouTube also), but I think they totally missed what the film was doing. There used to be a really awesome website dedicated to the movie, but it seems to have been taken down since I last checked it earlier this year. Sad!

Just look at how amazing this poster is! Basically, the aesthetic of this movie is everything I love about the 80s wrapped into a happy little 80-minute package. I watched it like three times before it was taken off of Netflix. I got the DVD for my birthday (although, it’s a bummer because it doesn’t have subtitles!) and have watched it a few times since. It’s loaded with fun and it’s even got a little wisdom mixed in, but not too much to weigh the film down. Anyone who knows me well and then watches this film will understand why I love it so much. I’m so glad I discovered it this year and I hope you guys get a chance to check it out as well!

wow you watched all those?!! I only watch 429 haha, although mind that was only the ones I hadn’t seen before, I don’t know how many I watched including ones I’d already seen before 😛 Well done though, that is a fantastic achievement!!! Here’s to a great 2014 in film!!!
