Movie Quote of the Day – Holy Smoke!, 1999 (dir. Jane Campion)

Ruth Barron: Be kind? So what? You don’t think I’m kind.
PJ Waters: *Shakes head no*
Ruth Barron: Oh, God. Now I feel sick. Why didn’t you just write “cruel”?
PJ Waters: Hey, come on.
Ruth Barron: No, you’re right. Be kind. . .that’s the whole point. Thank you. I’m very grateful. That is it, isn’t it? The only thing. The Dalai Lama said it. . .kindness. Do you know what I’m really scared of?
PJ Waters: What?
Ruth Barron: Don’t tell anyone.
PJ Waters: No.
Ruth Barron: Despite all my strong feelings, I’m heartless.
Movie Quote of the Day – Mixed Nuts, 1994 (dir. Nora Ephron)

Philip: You’re upset because it’s Christmas. Christmas is a time when you look at your life through a magnifying glass, and whatever you don’t have feels overwhelming. Being alone is so much lonelier at Christmas. Everything sad is so much sadder at Christmas. You can’t give in to this, Felix!
Movie Quote of the Day – Paris Is Burning, 1990 (dir. Jennie Livingston)

Dorian Corey: I always had hopes of being a big star. And then I looked–as you get older, you aim a little lower. And I just say, “Well, yeah, you still might make an impression.” Everybody wants to leave something behind them, some impression, some mark upon the world. Then you think, you’ve left a mark on the world if you just get through it, and a few people remember your name. Then you’ve left a mark. You don’t have to bend the whole world. I think it’s better to just enjoy it. Pay your dues, and enjoy it. If you shoot an arrow and it goes real high, hooray for you.
Movie Quote of the Day – A Christmas Melody, 2015 (dir. Mariah Carey)

Danny: You know what? You can make new memories, you can create a new future.
Kristin: That’s the problem. I don’t know where my future’s going. I mean, I thought I did, but look where it got me.
Danny: It got you back to people who care about you.
Movie Quote of the Day – Que Horas Ela Volta? (The Second Mother), 2015 (dir. Anna Muylaert)

Val: You think you’re special. You think you’re better than everyone else. You think you’re superior.
Jéssica: I don’t think I’m better Val, I just don’t think I’m worse.
Movie Quote of the Day – Exhibition, 2013 (dir. Joanna Hogg)

H: Maybe this is one aspect of the work that you’re capable of putting into people’s minds, a critical and analytical framework that otherwise they wouldn’t have. Yet you do it without being overly didactic or telling them exactly how to behave or think. And I have to say I spend a lot of time, um, nowadays when I’m looking at certain situations, I’m brought back to your work somehow. It stays with me, it haunts me, somehow it feeds my–it works as a road map to try and unpack, um, a lot of these kinds of psychological aspects of the domestic that are normally quite hard to reach. When you’re working on something yourself, do you– what are you responding to most profoundly? Is it the place itself, or is it the things that come from your private life that somehow find their way into the work? It’s ridiculous if you get to the point when you’re not even prepared to say anything. . .at all. It makes me feel I’m missing something, or that I’m just, uh–happened to be there. . .at the same time as you. I have no other purpose.
D: I know, but it’s funny because you say that about my work but actually, I find you very withholding emotionally. And you never talk about your emotions or what you’re feeling.
H: That’s a construct. It’s not a– People are different. Some people do, some people don’t.
D: Some people talk about their work, some people–
H: Right, right. Well, then it’s fine. It doesn’t bother me really. I can just–
D: Well, you just said it did.
H: It bothers me a little bit, but I’m curious and I support it, but I’m also– I feel that there’s this barrier. I can be useful to you. I can be useful. I’m not completely–
D: The thing is–
H: –useless.
D: I don’t want your input. I don’t want your judgement. I don’t want your ideas. I don’t want your cleverness because it derails me.
H: Then what’s– what am I doing then in the end? I’m just sort of–I’m company.
D: Yeah.
H: Or something.
D: You’re my companion.
Movie Quote of the Day – A Case of You, 2013 (dir. Kat Coiro)

Birdie: I think we are who we are when we’re with the people that make us feel the most alive.
Movie Quote of the Day – The Falling, 2015 (dir. Carol Morley)

Lydia: I read that one person is really like three people: the person you think you are, the person other people see, and the person you really are.
Movie Quote of the Day – Seven Women, Seven Sins: Pride – Superbia – Der Stolz, 1986 (dir. Ulrike Ottinger)

Superbia: I am pride. The proud root of all evil. I am Superbia, the first of the seven capital sins. I am always the first. The tree of wickedness grows out of me. My six daughters are its forbidden fruit: gluttony, laziness, greed, anger, envy, lust.
It’s Cinema Fanatic’s 6th Anniversary!
This time last year I was announcing my A Year With Women project – and I’m now two weeks from its end! It’s amazing. Also, Movie Quote of the Day celebrated its 5th anniversary and #Noirvember 6 was a total success. I’ll update more about my year in movies (and TV!) as the year actually closes out, but I do want to say how grateful I am to all my readers who have stuck with me for all this time!
