A Year With Women: September 2015 In Films

So September was a bit of a tumultuous month for me. At the beginning of the month I had a wisdom tooth extracted and towards the end of the month I got into a car accident (relatively minor), so between those two things I did not watch a film a day. It was also the end of the Dorothy Arzner retrospective at UCLA, and not only did I get to see two of her films I’d never seen before, I also got to see two of my favorite films in 35mm (Merrily We Go To Hell and The Bride Wore Red). Regardless of the month’s ups and downs, I did watch several films I really loved (and one I really hated). As always, find the complete list after the cut, as well as a few of my favorites.

Imogene Cochran: So, um, was that your husband leaving the house this morning?
Anora Fleece: Uh, yeah. He works at a rubber factory outside of Tulsa.
Imogene Cochran: Rubber. As in condoms?
Anora Fleece: Oh, uh, no. They make inner tubes, pool linings, that kind of thing.
Imogene Cochran: Made of rubber.
Anora Fleece: Oh, yeah.
Imogene Cochran: Huh. Interesting, I guess.
Anora Fleece: Not really.
Imogene Cochran: Nah, I was just being polite.
Anora Fleece: Uh, what does your husband do?
Imogene Cochran: He don’t do nothing, he dead.
Anora Fleece: Oh. Must be nice.
Imogene Cochran: Mmm-hmm.

Emad: If you had a child, would he get an American passport? So he could go wherever he wanted?
Soraya: Sure. If I wanted a baby.
Emad: I think it’d be nice to have a kid. Someone with your name and your blood. Doing the things you couldn’t.

Movie Quote of the Day – Sugar Cane Alley, 1983 (dir. Euzhan Palcy)

Medouze: All things in creation have their secrets. The soil has a secret. Water has a secret. Fire has a secret! Life! Don’t think that water and fire are enemies. No! They’re the forces of creation. Each needs the other to create life! Yes. . .they create life!

Movie Quote of the Day – Talk To Me, 2007 (dir. Kasi Lemmons)

Petey Greene (over the P.A.): Yo, I was reading my court papers the other day, y’all. They say, “Ralph Waldo ‘Petey’ Greene versus the United States of America.” I say, “Goddamn! No wonder I’m up in this motherfucker!” So I’m gonna dedicate this next one to my baby. Man, she gonna be up here in a minute, and this gal, Lord have mercy, she’s fine as frog’s hair, yeah. So while this is playing, I want y’all to think about the one y’all love. And I’m talking about the one sends you them pictures, man, not the cat in the next bunk.
Milo Hughes: [laughs]
Dewey Hughes: I guess you’re pretty hard up for entertainment around here.
Milo Hughes: Yeah, man. This is prison.

Movie Quote of the Day – The Brady Bunch Movie, 1995 (dir. Betty Thomas)

Mike Brady: Jan, a real friend likes you for who you are, not what’s on your face. If you judge your friends for passing judgment on you, you’re not only judging yourself you’re judging your friends for judging you. And that would be using bad judgment.
Jan Brady: I never thought of it that way.

Movie Quote of the Day – Et Maintenant On Va Où? (Where Do We Go Now?), 2011 (dir. Nadine Labaki)

Rita: So that makes you lose your heads? They look like they’ve been in a famine. Look at that anorexic one. And the other, flat as a board. Our smallest pair of boobs could feed half of the Ukraine!

Movie Quote of the Day – Half Wet, 2014 (dir. Sophie Gate)

Tiny Eyes: Are you excited about tomorrow?
Gus: A mollusk dies and a hermit crab crawls into his shell.
Tiny Eyes: Come on, Gus, it’s not the end of the world. It’s the end of your youth.

Movie Quote of the Day – I Am Sam, 2001 (dir. Jessie Nelson)

Lucy: “They perched in silence. ‘How can we be so diff. . diff…diff. . .” I don’t know that word.
Sam: Yes, you do. That’s the word that starts with a “D.”
Lucy: I’m tired.
Sam: I don’t believe you.
Lucy: Are you calling me a liar?
Sam: Yes. I think you have to read the word.
Lucy: No.
Sam: Yeah, you have to read that word.
Lucy: No.
Sam: Yeah. Here it is. There’s the picture where they’re all perched. Now read the word.
Lucy: No! I won’t read the word!
Sam: I’m your father and I’m telling you to read the word. I can tell you to because I’m your father.
Lucy: I’m stupid.
Sam: You are not stupid.
Lucy: Yes, I am.
Sam: You are not stupid, because you can read that word.
Lucy: I don’t want to read it if you can’t.
Sam: No, because it makes me happy. It makes me happy hearing you read. Yeah. It makes me happy when you’re reading.
Lucy: “They perched in silence for a long time. ‘How can we be so different and feel so much alike?’
mused Flitter. ‘How can we feel so different and be so much alike?’ wondered Pip. ‘I think this is quite a mystery.”‘
Sam: Keep going.

Movie Quote of the Day – The Namesake, 2007 (dir. Mira Nair)

Ashoke Ganguli: The camera! It is in the car. All this and no picture, huh? We just have to remember it then. Huh? Will you remember this day, Gogol?
Gogol: How long do I have to remember it?
Ashoke Ganguli: Ah, remember it always. Remember that you and I made the journey and went together to a place where there was nowhere left to go.
