Oscar Vault Monday – The Killing Fields, 1984 (dir. Roland Joffé)

This is one of the most harrowing films I have ever seen. I think director Roland Joffé handled the film deftly, not being too sentimental or too hard. The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning three: Best Cinematography (won), Best Film Editing (won), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor Haing S. Ngor (won), Best Actor Sam Waterston, Best Director and Best Picture. The other films nominated for Best Picture that year were A Passage To India, Places In The Heart, A Soldier’s Story and winner Amadeus.

Movie Quote of the Day – Billy Madison, 1995 (dir. Tamra Davis)

Principal: Mr. Madison, what you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Billy Madison: Okay, a simple “wrong” would’ve done just fine, but thanks.

Movie Quote of the Day – The Public Enemy, 1931 (dir. William A. Wellman)

Tom Powers: Ain’t you got a drink in the house?
Kitty: Well, not before breakfast, dear.
Tom Powers: I didn’t ask you for any lip. I asked you if you had a drink.
Kitty: I know Tom, but I, I wish that. . .
Tom Powers: . . .there you go with that wishin’ stuff again. I wish you was a wishing well, so that I could tie a bucket to ya and sink ya.
Kitty: Well, maybe you’ve found someone you like better.
Tom Powers: [smashes a grapefruit in her face]

Movie Quote of the Day – The Last Tycoon, 1976 (dir. Elia Kazan)

Pat Brady: [after a film screening] What’s Eddie, asleep? Jesus. Goddamn movie even puts the editor to sleep.
Assistant editor: He’s not asleep, Mr. Brady.
Pat Brady: What do you mean, he’s not asleep?
Assistant editor: He’s dead, Mr. Brady.
Pat Brady: Dead? What do you mean, he’s dead!
Assistant editor: He must have died during the. . .
Pat Brady: How can he be dead? We were just watching the rough cut! Jesus, I didn’t hear anything. Did you hear anything?
Fleishacker: Not a thing.
Assistant editor: Eddie. . .he probably didn’t want to disturb the screening, Mr. Brady.

Movie Quote of the Day – Paris, Texas, 1984 (dir. Wim Wenders)

Jane Henderson: I. . .I used to make long speeches to you after you left. I used to talk to you all the time, even though I was alone. I walked around for some months talking to you. Now I don’t know what to say. It was easier when I just imagined you. I even imagined you talking back to me. We’d have long conversations, the two of us. It was almost like you were there. I could hear you, I could see you, smell you. I could hear your voice. Sometimes your voice would wake me up. It would wake me up in the middle of the night, just like you were there in the room with me. Then. . .it slowly faded. I couldn’t picture you anymore. I tried to talk out loud to you like I used to, but there was nothing there. I couldn’t hear you. Then. . .I just gave up. Everything stopped. You. . .just disappeared. . .And now I’m working here. . .I hear your voice all the time. . .Every man has your voice.

New Trailer for “My Week With Marilyn”

This is one of my most anticipated films of the year. The cast looks divine, anchored by what looks to be another fabulous turn by Michelle Williams as the world’s most famous blonde. I have been a huge Marilyn Monroe fan for about ten years now. I think she is one of the most under-appreciated actresses and misunderstood people of the twentieth century. I hope this film does her justice.

You can watch the trailer here at Yahoo! movies. The film is set to have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 9th and will open in theaters on November 4th in the United States and November 18th in the UK.
