May 2012 in Films: French Films, Student Films and One Year in San Francisco
Sunday marked the one year anniversary of my return to San Francisco and boy what a year it has been. So much cinema. So many opportunities. I’m glad you all came along for the ride. I have some exciting news! The book that I contributed the foreword to is finally available for pre-order! It is called Lew Ayres: Hollywood’s Conscientious Objector by Lesley L. Coffin and you can pre-order it here. I watched a lot of student films at the Academy of Art University’s Epidemic Film Festival and did a few interviews/went to some Q&As with industry professionals. There’ll be content from that posted at YAM Magazine sometime soon. I also finished the Antoine Doinel cycle by François Turffaut and it was amazing. As always, the full list is after the cut, plus five favorites.
Movie Quote of the Day – How to Marry a Millionaire, 1953 (dir. Jean Negulesco)
Pola Debevoise: You know who I’d like to marry?
Loco Dempsey: Who?
Pola Debevoise: Rockefeller.
Loco Dempsey: Which one?
Pola Debevoise: I don’t care.
Loco Dempsey: I wouldn’t mind marrying a Vanderbilt.
Pola Debevoise: Or Mr. Cadillac.
Schatze Page: No such person. I checked.
Loco Dempsey: Is there a Mr. Texaco?
Movie Quote of the Day – Shame, 2011 (dir. Steve McQueen)
Sissy Sullivan: I make you angry all the time and I don’t know why.
Brandon Sullivan: No. You trap me. You force me into a corner and you trap me. “I’ve got nowhere else to go.” I mean, what sort of fucking shit is that?
Sissy Sullivan: You’re my brother.
Brandon Sullivan: So what? I’m responsible for you?
Sissy Sullivan: Yes.
Brandon Sullivan: No, I’m not.
Sissy Sullivan: Yes you fucking are.
Brandon Sullivan: No. I didn’t give birth to you. I didn’t bring you into this world.
Sissy Sullivan: You’re my brother, I’m your sister. We’re family, we’re meant to look after each other.
Brandon Sullivan: You’re not looking after me; I’m looking after myself.
Sissy Sullivan: I’m trying. I’m trying to help you.
Brandon Sullivan: How are you helping me, huh? How are you helping me? How are you helping me? Huh? Look at me. How are you helping me? You come in here and you’re a weight on me. Do you understand me? You’re a burden. You’re just fucking dragging me down. How are you helping me? You can’t even clean up after yourself. Stop playing the victim.
Sissy Sullivan: I’m not playing the fucking victim. If I left, I would never hear from you again. Don’t you think that’s sad? Don’t you think that’s sad? You’re my brother.
Movie Quote of the Day – Just Like Heaven, 2005 (dir. Mark Waters)
Elizabeth Masterson: David?
David Abbott: What?
Elizabeth Masterson: Tell him thank you.
David Abbott: We’re really grateful, Jack.
Jack Houriskey: I’m not doin’ it for you.
David Abbott: Then why are you doing it?
Jack Houriskey: Because someday, trust me, I’m gonna need help movin’ a body. When that day comes, I don’t wanna hear any shit from you.
Movie Quote of the Day – Red Eye, 2005 (dir. Wes Craven)
Jackson Rippner: The name’s Jackson, by the way.
Lisa Reisert: Lisa.
Jackson Rippner: Pleased to meet you.
Lisa Reisert: Is it Jack for short?
Jackson Rippner: No. No, I haven’t gone by Jack since I was ten years old. [beat] Last name’s Rippner.
Lisa Reisert: Jack Rippner. . .Jack the. . .ohhhh.
Jackson Rippner: There you go.
Lisa Reisert: That wasn’t very nice of your parents.
Jackson Rippner: That’s what I told them. Before I killed them.
Movie Quote of the Day – Magnolia, 1999 (dir. Paul Thomas Anderson)
Phil Parma: I know this sounds silly and I know that I might sound ridiculous. Like this is the scene in the movie where the guy’s trying to get ahold of the long lost son, you know, but this is that scene. This is that scene. And I think that they have those scenes in movies because they’re true, you know, because they really happen. And you gotta believe me. This is really happening. I mean, I can give you my number and you can go check with whoever you have to go check with and call me back, but do not leave me hanging on this. Alright? Please? See, this is the scene in the movie where you help me out.
