Aaron Sorkin Wins At WGA, USC Scripter Awards

Aaron Sorkin can add a few more feathers to his cap on his way to the Oscars later this month, winning Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild of America awards. The Social Network screenwriter also won the top prize at the USC Scripter Awards, which gives its prize to the best adapted screenplay of the year. Sorkin sure seems like he cannot lose come Oscar night; he’s won almost every single award he’s been nominated for.

For full updates on the rest of the WGA winners (remember, the screenplay for The King’s Speech is ineligible due to David Seidler not being a member), follow Steve Pond on Twitter.

POLL: Predict The Golden Globes!

The Golden Globe Awards air tonight 5PM PST on NBC. Although, the Golden Globes this year have a couple of outright ridiculous nominations, some of them are on par with the rest of Oscar race. The King’s Speech leads the nominees this year with 7, followed by The Fighter  and The Social Network with 6 each. The Globes are put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and they tend to have a much different taste than the Academy. In the last twenty years the winner of the Best Motion Picture – Drama (and in 2002’s case Musical or Comedy) has only gone on to win Best Picture 11 times. The Best Director winner has coincided with The Academy 13/20, Actor 12/20, Actress 16/20 (if you count Kate Winslet winning supporting at the GG and lead at the Oscars), Supporting Actor 12/20 and Supporting Actress 11/20.

After the cut I’ve got polls set up for all the motion picture categories.  Also, while you’re at it, if you could take a second to vote for Cinema Fanatic at the 2011 Total Movie Blog Awards, I’d be ever so grateful.

Preview: How The Critics’ Choice Awards Align With Oscar

It’s important to note first off that both the Broadcast Film Critics Association (Critics’ Choice Awards) and Hollywood Foreign Press Association (Golden Globe Awards) do not have any membership overlap with The Academy. The only awards that have any overlap the guilds: The Screen Actors Guild, Directors Guilt, Producers Guild, etc. That being said, the Critics’ Choice Awards usually have quite a few overlap nominations in its categories with The Academy. In fact, the Critics’ Choice winner for Best Picture has gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars for 4 out of the last 5 years; Best Director and Best Actor 5 out of the last 5 years.
