Movie Quote of the Day – India Cabaret, 1985 (dir. Mira Nair)

india_cabaret

Mira Nair: Do you feel any shame?
Dancer 1: Why shame? You leave shame behind when you enter this profession.
Dancer 2: When I go out at night, sometimes a customer sees me and says, “Look, there goes that naked dancing girl, that whore.” I say, “Motherfucker, you enjoyed me on stage, and now you say this?” That’s when I feel shame.
Dancer 1: If somebody said that to me, I’d say, “Here’s my address. Come see me tonight.” If we speak of shame, then how would we work? And if we don’t work, the how would we make money? That’s why, in such a place, shame does not exist. If the viewer does not feel shame, why should the viewed?

Ely: Do you know why I love you?
Naomi: Because of my uncanny ability to wiggle my eyebrows?
Ely: That is fascinating. And also because when I feel like sticking my head in an oven, you pull it out and you put cookies in there instead.

Movie Quote of the Day – Home for the Holidays, 1995 (dir. Jodie Foster)

Claudia: Nobody means what they say on Thanksgiving, Mom. You know that. That’s what the day’s supposed to be all about, right? Torture.
Adele: That and giving thanks that we don’t have to go through this for another year. Except we do, because those bastards went and put Christmas right in the middle, just to punish us.

A Year With Women: October 2015 in Films

I had intended to spend most of October watching horror films by women (and I did watch quite a few; special shout out to Heavy Midnites for their Ladies of the 80s: A Decade of Horror, where they showed 8 horror films over 3 days all directed by women), but I found myself watching almost everything TCM showed during their Trailblazing Women in Film series. They showed over 50 films from 47 different directors over the course of the month. I saw 25 new-to-me films, plus I re-watched another 11 films that are favorites of mine. If you missed my live-tweet of Valley Girl, you missed a tripendicular good time! As always, the full list of what I watched can be found after the cut, as well as a few highlights.

Linda: Okay, the first thing to realize is that it is just a dream. There’s nothing to be afraid of. Dreams are only your subconscious’ way of talking to you.
Tracy: Uh, Beth, if your subconscious asks for me I’m not here, okay?

Chillum: Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends, lovers, Sweet Sixteen. Useless bloody lot.
Krishna: Me, too? Aren’t I your friend?
Chillum: Chillum has no friends.

Leila: I always knew you would try hard not to be a failure.
Victor: Oh, you’re concerned about that?
Leila: Oh, I’ve thought about it. Not with any blame of course. I wouldn’t blame you for being a failure. I’m not white.

Movie Quote of the Day – Blood Diner, 1987 (dir. Jackie Kong)

Vitamin: That’s the best friggin veggie burger I’ve had in a sonofabitch long time! That’s a damn good veggie burger. If I didn’t know better, I’d swear there was some meat in it. I’m an expert on veggie burgers. I’ve eaten them all across America. I’ve eaten in some of those health food hangouts where the soup ain’t fit to piss in.

Movie Quote of the Day – Humanoids From The Deep, 1980 (dir. Barbara Peeters)

Dr. Susan Drake: I have to be with men like you around.
