Auntie Shrew: The Great Owl would know what to do about this. You must go see him.
Mrs. Brisby: I couldn’t do that. Owls eat mice.
Auntie Shrew: Well, my child, show a little courage. We’re fighting for Timmy’s life.

Guy Hamilton: Billy, you’re a professional. Is that pornography or art?
Billy Kwan: If it’s in focus, it’s pornography, if it’s out of focus, it’s art.

Mickey Morrissey: Do you know who the attorney for the Archdiocese is? Ed Concannon!
Frank Galvin: He’s a good man. . .
Mickey Morrissey: He’s a good man? He’s the Prince of fucking Darkness!

Oscar Vault Monday – Tootsie, 1982 (dir. Sydney Pollack)

I’m not sure when I first saw this film, but I think it was probably on television some time in the 90s. I didn’t do a good rewatch of the film until my first  semester of film grad school. One of my instructors used it a lot in his teaching screenplay form (it really is a great model), so on the last day we watched the entire film. Having just rewatched it again, I can’t help but think it really is a perfect film. It’s not the most realistic film (far from it); but it is storytelling at its finest. Tootsie was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning one: Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Original Song, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress Teri Garr, Best Supporting Actress Jessica Lange (won), Best Actor Dustin Hoffman, Best Director and Best Picture. The other film nominated for Best Picture that year were: E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Missing, The Verdict and winner Gandhi.

Corinne Burns: You are so jealous of me. I’m everything you ever wanted to be.
Billy: A cunt?
Corinne Burns: Exactly.

Movie Quote of the Day – TRON, 1982 (dir. Steven Lisberger)

TRON: If you are a user, then everything you’ve done has been according to a plan.
Kevin Flynn: Ha! You wish! You guys know what it’s like. You keep doing what it looks like you’re supposed to, no matter how crazy it seems.

Movie Quote of the Day – The Thing, 1982 (dir. John Carpenter)

MacReady: How you doin’, old boy?
Dr. Blair: I don’t know who to trust.
MacReady: I know what you mean, Blair. Trust’s a tough thing to come by these days. Tell you what. . .why don’t you just trust in the Lord?

Movie Quote of the Day – My Favorite Year, 1982 (dir. Richard Benjamin)

Alan Swann: Live? Live? What does ‘live’ mean?
Benjy Stone: It means at the exact moment you’re cavorting and leaping around that stage over there, twenty million people are seeing it.
Alan Swann: Wait a minute. Wait. . .a . . .minute.
Benjy Stone: Mr. Swann, you’re white.
Alan Swann: You mean it all goes into the camera lens and then just spills out into people’s houses?!
Benjy Stone: Yeah.
Alan Swann: Why has nobody had the goodness to explain this to me before?
Benjy Stone: It’s nothing to worry about, Mr. Swann. Our audiences are great.
Alan Swann: Audience? What audience?
Benjy Stone: You knew there was an audience. What did you think those seats were for?
Alan Swann: I haven’t performed in front of an audience for twenty-eight years! [nervous laughter] Audience. I played a butler. I HAD ONE LINE! [beat] I forgot it.
Benjy Stone: Don’t worry. This is going to be easy.
Alan Swann: For you maybe. I’m not an actor, I’m a movie star!

Movie Quote of the Day – Diner, 1982 (dir. Barry Levinson)

Beth: What are you getting so crazy about? It’s just music. It’s not that big a deal.
Shrevie: It is! Don’t you understand? This is important to me!
Beth: Shrevie, why do you yell at me? I never hear you yell at any of your friends.
Shrevie: Look, pick a record, okay.
Beth: What?
Shrevie: Just pick any record. Any record! Okay, what’s the hit side?
Beth: “Good Golly Miss Molly”
Shrevie: Ok, now ask me what’s on the flip side.
Beth: Why?
Shrevie: Just, just ask me what’s on the flip side, okay?
Beth: What is on the flip side?
Shrevie: “Hey, Hey, Hey” 1958. Specialty Records. [beat] See? You don’t ask me things like that, do you? No! You never ask me what’s on the flip side.
Beth: No! Because I don’t give a shit. Shrevie, who cares about what’s on the flip side of a record?
Shrevie: I do! Every one of my records means something! The label, the producer, the year it was made. Who was copying whose style, who’s expanding on that. Don’t you understand? When I listen to my records they take me back to certain points in my life, okay? Just don’t touch my records, ever! The first time that I met you? Modell’s sister’s high school graduation party, right? 1955. And “Ain’t That A Shame” was playing when I walked into the door!

Movie Quote of the Day – Tootsie, 1982 (dir. Sydney Pollack)

Julie: I miss Dorothy.
Michael Dorsey: You don’t have to. She’s right here. And she misses you. [beat] Look, you don’t know me from Adam. But I was a better man with you, as a woman than I ever was with a woman, as a man. You know what I mean? I just gotta learn to do it without the dress. [beat] I mean, at this point in our relationship, there might be an advantage to my wearing pants. [beat] The hard part’s over, you know? We were already. . .good friends.
