Precursors Chart and Some Frontrunners
Posted by Marya E. Gates
It’s that time in Awards Season wherein I start maintaining a Precursors Chart, a handy chart that lets you know what films have won what awards. So far the char only has the Washington D.C. Film Critics, National Board of Review and Hollywood Film Award winners. But I’ll update it once a week or so as the various critics associations and guilds announce their winners.
(Click on the picture to see it full-sized)
So far the main frontrunners are The Social Network for picture, director and adapted screenplay, Christian Bale in The Fighter for supporting actor and Toy Story 3 for animated film. The rest of the categories are still pretty spread out, although we do have a pretty good look at possible nominees.

“The Social Network” Named Best Film By The Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association

Seems like David Fincher’s film is picking up lots of momentum as Awards Season is beginning. The question is whether it can keep it up all the way through Oscar night. The Town won Best Ensemble again. Makes me wonder if it’ll get a SAG nomination. Sure looks like it.

The National Board of Review – Awards Season is Officially Open

Like I said on my earlier post, winning at the NBR doesn’t necessarily mean winning come Oscar night. But it does help jump-start a film or a performance into the race and often is a good look at what the nominees could look like.
For example, Winter’s Bone‘s inclusion on their Top Ten list is a big push for a little film. So is Jennifer Lawrence’s win for Breakthrough Performance. Last year the NBR gave that award to two performances: Gabby Sidibe in Precious and Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker. Both performances wound up with Academy Award nominations.
Jesse Eisenberg Named Best Actor of the Year By The National Board of Review

The National Board of Review is one of the first major precursors of the Awards Season. While their winners don’t necessarily go on to win the Oscar, they almost always get nominated. So at the very least, these awards are a good look at some solid performances, and films, that will probably be receiving an Oscar nomination in a few months.

David Fincher’s “The Social Network” Eloquently Defines A Generation
Posted by Marya E. Gates
I started college in August of 2004 at the University of California, Berkeley. At that point Facebook was only at a handful of universities, Cal being one of them. In September 2004 the first of several lawsuits were filed against Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg. At that point everyone I knew at college, which was not many people, had a Facebook profile. Actually it was still called “The Facebook” in the URL. I shared this story because having been through practically all the changes Facebook has gone through in the last six years, made watching David Fincher’s new film The Social Network like reliving college all over again. There were so many little things, Eisenberg on his LiveJournal among others, that made me have little tinges of nostalgia for a time that isn’t really even all that long ago. I was sort of amazed that Fincher and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin were able to capture the essence of my generation, an essence I have been trying to explain to my father for years now, so effortlessly while themselves being so removed from it. Really though, Fincher is so good a recreating eras it’s not all that surprising.
Minor spoilers after the cut.
Auteur of the Week: David Fincher

David Fincher is one of my favorite directors. He is so insanely meticulous with his films. I think he’s created several of the most memorable films of the last twenty years. His latest film, The Social Network, looks to be nothing short of fabulous and I can’t wait to see it this weekend.
