Movie Quote of the Day – Re-Animator, 1985 (dir. Stuart Gordon)

re-animator

Dan Cain: [Dan’s cat has died and been found in Herbert’s refrigerator] You couldn’t call, or write a note?
Herbert West: I was busy pushing bodies around as you well know and what would a note say, Dan? “Cat dead, details later”?

Leonard Woolf: Why does someone have to die?
Virginia Woolf: Leonard?
Leonard Woolf: In your book, you said someone had to die.
Virginia Woolf: Mmmm.
Leonard Woolf: Why? Is this a stupid question?
Virginia Woolf: No.
Leonard Woolf: Then answer my question, stupid.
Virginia Woolf: Not at all.
Leonard Woolf: Well?
Virginia Woolf: Someone has to die in order that the rest of us should value life more. It’s contrast.

Female Filmmaker Friday: Valley Girl, 1983 (dir. Martha Coolidge)

The first time I saw Valley Girl, I rented it from Netflix and I watched it three times in a 24-hour period before I returned it. I then immediately bought the DVD. I have seen it countless times (including twice on the big screen!). I just love it so much. It is endlessly watchable.

Pre-codes, TV and Lady Directors: September 2014 in Films

I actually managed to watch the equivalent of a movie a day this month! (That’s probably because I failed to read a book a week). I also started watching more TV shows. I watched all of Being Mary Jane and You’re The Worst, finished up The Leftovers, continued watching The Knick and Outlander and started watching the last season of Boardwalk Empire. I also watched the pilots for Gotham (well, two episodes), black-ish, and How To Get Away With Murder. Of those three, I’ll probably only continue watching black-ish. Movie-wise, I watched a lot of pre-codes thanks to TCM, and a bunch of films directed by ladies (awww yeahhh). As always, after the cut are all the movies I watched and my five favorites.

Movie Quote of the Day – Brokedown Palace, 1999 (dir. Jonathan Kaplan)

brokedown_palace

Alice: My best friend is not a drug smuggler. She is innocent. She’s innocent. All she ever did wrong was to trust me. Here you believe one friend knows what the other does. Maybe that’s friendship but I’m American, and I was not that kind of a friend. I know this. Because I did it. Because I was foolish and jealous. I was afraid she’d drift away. I was afraid I was gonna lose her. She never knew. It was all me. She spent all this time in your prison for my mistakes. I’m sorry. Please, if you need someone to do the time, I’ll do it. I’ll do her time and mine. Just let her go, please.
Emissary to Crown: Then you’re of strong character and would lie to save your friend?
Alice: No, I am of weak character. And I just want to make up for my mistakes.
Emissary to Crown: If you’re lying to save your friend, then you’re of sufficient character to earn what you want. If you’re telling the truth, then your friend is innocent and should go free. If you are willing to serve her term and yours, your friend is pardoned.
