Noirvember 2019 in Films

This was the 10th anniversary of Noirvember this year! It was really amazing to see just how wide spread the celebration has grown over the last decade. I’m grateful for everyone who participates, and am so happy that so many people are able to discover new favorites every year. As always, you can see all the films I watched in November, plus a few highlighted favorites, after the cut.

Movie Quote of the Day – The Spiral Staircase, 1946 (dir. Robert Siodmak)

Dr. Parry: She was just in my office last week.
Dr. Harvey: Did she pay her bill, or was this her way of getting out of it?
Dr. Parry: I don’t have enough experience to make that sort of joke.

Movie Quote of the Day – The Dark Mirror, 1946 (dir. Robert Siodmak)

Ruth Collins: Terry and I have never been rivals. Never. Not in the slightest.
Dr. Scott Elliott: All women are rivals fundamentally. But, it doesn’t bother them because they automatically discount the successes of others and alibi their own failures on the grounds of circumstances. Luck, they say. But, between sisters, it’s a little more serious. The circumstances are generally about the same, so they have fewer excuses of which to comfort themselves. That’s why sisters can hate each other with such terrifying intensity. And, as for twins, especially identical twins, well, you must have some ideas yourself what agonies of jealousy are possible.

Movie Quote of the Day – Christmas Holiday, 1944 (dir. Robert Siodmak)

Robert Manette: You know, sometimes when I listen to it I feel that, that there’s nothing that man is capable of that I can’t do. Then it stops and it’s over.
Abigail Martin: Oh, not for me. When I hear good music I feel, well I feel as though something had been added to my life that wasn’t there before.
Robert Manette: I’d like that. Think you can teach me?

Movie Quote of the Day – The File on Thelma Jordon, 1950 (dir. Robert Siodmak)

Thelma Jordan: Tony! You scared me!
Tony Laredo: I didn’t mean to. I hate to be an eavesdropper.

Movie Quote of the Day – Criss Cross, 1949 (dir. Robert Siodmak)

Anna: All those things that happened to us. . .everything that went before. . .you’ll forget it. You’ll see. I’ll make you forget it. After it’s done, after it’s all over and we’re safe, it’ll be just you and me. You and me, the way it should’ve been all along from the start.

Movie Quote of the Day – The Killers, 1946 (dir. Robert Siodmak)

Big Jim Colfax: I’ll tell you something, Riordon, if there’s one thing in this world I hate, it’s a double-crossing dame.
