Ellis Moonsong: Why do things that start off so promisingly always have a way of ending up in the dump?

Nancy: I want a new life.I want to go skiing. I want to go dancing. I want to go to the beach. I want to ride through Muir on a motorcycle. All we ever do is see movies.
Allan: Yeah, well I write for a film magazine. They send me. Besides, I happen to like movies.
Nancy: You like movies because you’re one of life’s great watchers. I’m not like that. I’m a doer. I want to live. I want to participate. We never laugh together.
Allan: How can you say that? I don’t know about you, but I am constantly laughing. I chuckle, I giggle, I guffaw, occasionally.
Mother: You’ve got this sixth sense for picking losers. Sometimes I wonder. . .do you really want to get married?
Bea: More than anything! Don’t you think I want to have a child before it’s too late? God, how I envy you. I just want it to be perfect.
Mother: Well, it’s never perfect. If you wait for perfect, you don’t get pregnant. You wind up with your teeth in a glass of water.
Bala: Why are you stalking me? Don’t you realize that I’m out of your league?
Z: You’re the one who was cruising the worker bar looking for a little action. And you just happened to find it. . .the swarthy, earthy, sensual worker.
Bala: Please. I was slumming it. Don’t you get it? I chose you because you were the most pathetic little bug in the joint.
Z: I was gonna let you become part of my most erotic fantasies. But now, you can forget that.
Boris Yellnikoff: I happen to hate New Year’s celebrations. Everybody desperate to have fun. Trying to celebrate in some pathetic little way. Celebrate what? A step closer to the grave? That’s why I can’t say enough times, whatever love you can get and give, whatever happiness you can filch or provide, every temporary measure of grace, whatever works. And don’t kid yourself, it’s by no means all up to your own human ingenuity. A bigger part of your existence is luck than you’d like to admit. Christ, you know the odds of your father’s one sperm from the billions, finding the single egg that made you? Don’t think about it, you’ll have a panic attack.
I’ve written a lot about Woody Allen over the last few years and I’m sure I’ll be writing about him for many more years to come. He doesn’t always hit the mark, but when he does, he hits it better than just about anyone. Case in point: 2011’s smash hit Midnight In Paris. It may well be in my top five favorite of Woody Allen’s many films. Part of this has to do with my love of Paris in twenties (and the fact that pretty much everything mentioned in the film was something I studied in college) and partly because of the experience I had when I first saw it. I had just moved back to San Francisco (like, literally THAT DAY) and I went to see it with my roommate and one of my good friends (who was visiting from Florida!) and it had been raining and the showtime we wanted to go to was sold out so we had to wait an hour in the lobby and it was the most perfect experience I could have asked for. There’s a lot of things to write about with this film, but I’ve decided just to focus on a few facets of it that I really love. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, winning one: Best Art Direction, Best Original Screenplay (won), Best Director and Best Picture. The other films nominated for Best Picture in 2011 were: The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Help, Hugo, Moneyball, The Tree of Life, War Horse and winner The Artist.
