Movie Quote of the Day – The Old Maid, 1939 (dir. Edmund Goulding)
Tina: I’ll go, but before I go, you’ve got to know that I’m sick your spying and fault-finding and meddling–
Delia Lovell: No, Tina!
Tina: You can say what you want to me Mummy, because you understand me and I love you. But she’s just a sour old maid who hates me–
Delia Lovell: Tina!
Tina: –because I’m young and attractive and in love, while she’s old and hideous and dried up and has never known anything about love!
Female Filmmaker Friday: Bridget Jones’s Diary, 2001 (dir. Sharon Maguire)
It’s Friday, so it’s time for another edition of Female Filmmaker Friday. Next week I might not post one because of TCMFF, but I think you guys can handle that. This week I’m going to talk about one of my all-time favorite films. There’s a lot to say about Bridget Jones’s Diary and I’m definitely not going to hit all the points; instead I’m just going to write about the aspects and scenes that have stuck with me over the years. I’ve seen this film a million times since it came out in theaters (it was one of the very first DVDs I ever owned) and I’ve also read the book(s). As much as I enjoyed them, this film is my favorite interpretation of the iconic Ms. Jones.
Movie Quote of the Day – Sayonara, 1957 (dir. Joshua Logan)
Major Gruver: Look, Miss Ogi, I’m not up too good on the Japanese way of doing things. Maybe I’m saying the wrong things. Maybe my American manners are embarrassing. But I figured, as long as you came over here tonight maybe you were interested a little bit in meeting me too. Now, maybe I’m wrong and if I’m wrong, then you’ve got to tell me where we go from here, because I don’t know what to say. I’ve run out of things to say.
Movie Quote of the Day – Our Man In Havana, 1959 (dir. Carol Reed)
Capt. Segura: The engineer does not belong to the torturable class.
Beatrice: Are there class distinctions in torture?
Capt. Segura: Some people expect to be tortured. Others are outraged by it. One never tortures except by mutual agreement.
Beatrice: Who agrees?
Capt. Segura: Usually the poor. In your welfare state you have social security, therefore you have no poor. Consequently there you are untorturable.
Movie Quote of the Day – Sadie McKee, 1934 (dir. Clarence Brown)
Opal: Feeling better?
Sadie McKee: Yes, thanks to you.
Opal: You’re gonna find out about men – – the tripe.
Sadie McKee: No, thanks. Not interested.
Opal: Swell. They come to my dump to get taken, see? And if you’re smart you — [to woman on subway] Am I talking loud enough?
Sadie McKee: I’m kind of sick of men.
Opal: Oh, you’re crazy. They’ve got what we want, all of it. And every gal has her price. Yours ought to be high. [to woman on subway] Every gal has her price. I don’t know what got, but you sure gyped somebody.
