Movie Quote of the Day – Finding Neverland, 2004 (dir. Marc Forster)
Posted by Marya E. Gates
Peter Llewelyn Davies: What did you bring me over here for?
Sylvia Llewelyn Davies: Peter.
Peter Llewelyn Davies: But, this is absurd. It’s just a dog.
Sylvia Llewelyn Davies: Come on, darling.
J.M. Barrie: Just a dog? *Just*? Porthos, don’t listen! Porthos dreams of being a bear, and you want to dash those dreams by saying he’s *just* a dog? What a horrible candle-snuffing word. That’s like saying, “He can’t climb that mountain, he’s just a man”, or “That’s not a diamond, it’s just a rock.” Just.

Johnny Depp and Julianne Moore – Where’s Their Oscar Already!?
Posted by Marya E. Gates
These are two performers who have almost consistently given amazing performances for nearly the last two decades. They’ve gotten some nominations sure, but only for a handful of their work. Also in the last two decades many actors and actresses with lesser talent who gave perhaps one, or two in the case of Hilary Swank, phenomenal performances have received numerous nominations and wins. Paul Newman had to wait nearly 40 years for a win, as did Jack Palance, so I’m sure Johnny Depp and Julianne Moore will get their due sometime. Of course, that’s not necessarily true either. Just ask Deborah Kerr, Richard Burton or Peter O’Toole. That being said, I’d like to discuss the roles for which these two performers were nominated for Oscar. Ideally, I’d have liked to talk about every performance in which they should have been nominated, but that would take all day.
(500) Days of Summer and 9 Other Great Films the Academy Completely Ignored This Decade
Posted by Marya E. Gates
I was really shocked that (500) Days of Summer was completely ignored by the Academy this year. It was on several critic’s top ten lists. It had won several critic awards for its screenplay. I really thought, at the very least, it would get nods for Original Screenplay and Editing (hello, that Expectations vs. Reality scene was fucking awesome). I even had it on my predictions for Best Picture.
Alas, this was not the case and was probably, for me, the biggest disappoint of Tuesday’s announcements. However, this is not the first time an amazing piece of cinema has gone completely un-lauded by the Academy. I’ve picked one film from each year of this past decade that also has zero Oscar nominations to its name.

Miramax Offices Close – The End of An Era
Posted by Marya E. Gates
I hear on the grapevine though that the Weinsteins, who were bought out of Miramax years ago and started their own company – The Weinstein Company, are still trying to get the name back. I hope they do.
All through the 90s and early 00s Miramax, under the Weinsteins, pretty much dominated the Academy Awards.
