Movie Quote of the Day – Girlfriends, 1978 (dir. Claudia Weill)

girlfriends

Susan: You’re very inflexible.
Eric: Who, me?
Susan: I don’t like you when you’re inflexible.
Eric: I don’t like it when you exaggerate to make sure I’ll listen to you.
Susan: Well, I can’t stand it when you don’t listen to me.
Eric: I don’t like it when you’re loud.
Susan: Well, I don’t like you when you’re not loud. I don’t know why I like you.
Eric: Because you can tell me why you don’t like me.
Susan: I like me when I don’t need you.
Eric: I don’t want you to need me. I want you to want me.
Susan: There’s no truth like bullshit.
Eric: Very good, Susan. 2 points.
Susan: Thank you.

Michael: I would bet you that that happens a lot more often than you think, you know? You know, some guys goes and marries some whacko and then he becomes a whacko and then his whole life goes and becomes a living hell, you know?
Dom: Mikey! What are you thinking, huh? Huh? You comparing this to you and Donna? You’re nuts, buddy.
Michael: You’ve never been in this situation, Dom. With a wedding and all. Forget about it. Suddenly everything becomes very, very complicated. You know, it’s like, she’ll talk to me and she tells me stuff and she says it’s important and I don’t even know what the fuck she’s talking about. It really makes you feel like you’re losing control.
Dom: Mikey, you ain’t losing control over nothing. You’re getting married. A person’s gotta adjust to certain things.
Michael: What if I can’t adjust?
Dom: When you’re in love with somebody, you adjust.
Michael: Dom, I just don’t want to end up hating my life.
Dom: You’re not going to end up hating anything. So forget about it, all right?

Jud Crandall: Women are supposed to be the ones who are good at keeping secrets, but any woman who knows anything at all would tell you she’s never seen into a man’s heart. The soil of a man’s heart is stonier, Louis. . .like the soil up there in the old Micmac burying ground.

Movie Quote of the Day – Near Dark, 1987 (dir. Kathryn Bigelow)

Caleb Colton: What the fuck is goin’ on?
Severen: It ain’t what’s goin’ on, son. It’s what’s comin’ off. Your face. Clean off.

Atti: You’re watching me?
The Girl: At night.
Atti: So. . .what did you see all this time watching me?
The Girl: You’re sad. You don’t remember what you want. You don’t remember wanting. It passed long ago. And nothing ever changes.
Atti: Idiots and rich people are the only ones who think things can change.

A Year With Women: September 2015 In Films

So September was a bit of a tumultuous month for me. At the beginning of the month I had a wisdom tooth extracted and towards the end of the month I got into a car accident (relatively minor), so between those two things I did not watch a film a day. It was also the end of the Dorothy Arzner retrospective at UCLA, and not only did I get to see two of her films I’d never seen before, I also got to see two of my favorite films in 35mm (Merrily We Go To Hell and The Bride Wore Red). Regardless of the month’s ups and downs, I did watch several films I really loved (and one I really hated). As always, find the complete list after the cut, as well as a few of my favorites.
