Jesse Eisenberg Named Best Actor of the Year By The National Board of Review

The National Board of Review is one of the first major precursors of the Awards Season. While their winners don’t necessarily go on to win the Oscar, they almost always get nominated. So at the very least, these awards are a good look at some solid performances, and films, that will probably be receiving an Oscar nomination in a few months.

“Winter’s Bone” Leads Independent Spirit Awards Nominees

The nominees in the first three categories actually look like pretty clear precursors for what we’ll expect to see at the Oscars next year. Several of the films and performances nominated are big enough to carry over to the Oscars, especially if they get some love from either the National Board of Review or the Golden Globes.

BEST FEATURE

  • 127 Hours
  • Black Swan
  • Greenberg
  • The Kids Are All Right
  • Winter’s Bone

Oscars potentially moving to January?

This news won’t change the date for the 83rd ceremony, which has its date firmly set for February 27th, 2011. Organizers say the earliest it would happen would be for the 2012 ceremony.

Sasha over at AwardsDaily has a pretty great post, pretty much explaining that all this would do would create a shift in all of the precursors and not do anything to fix “awards season fatigue.” I also like what she said about how if the Academy really wants to get more viewers they should think about adding a people’s choice awards, a la the Orange Rising Star Award that the BAFTAs have. If American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, etc has taught us anything it’s that American’s like to vote on pop culture related things.

What really irks me about this move is that for people who don’t live in Los Angeles, or any city for that matter, this has the potential of making it even harder to watch all the movies that will be up for Oscar before the actual ceremony. I was barely able to do it when I lived in San Francisco, let alone now that I live in the middle of nowhere.

What do you guys think about this potential move in the date?

Bigelow Wins DGA

KATHRYN WON YOU GUYS. SHE WON. I am so happy about this. SO HAPPY.

So what does this mean for Oscar? Well, the winner of the DGA has gone on to win Best Director at the Academy Awards  58 of the last 60 years. This is one of the few precursors that tend to accurately predict how Oscar will go.

“The Hurt Locker” takes top prize at the Producers Guild Awards

This is a wonderful sign for The Hurt Locker. The winner at the PGA has gone on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards 13 times out of the last 20 years.

What We Learn From the SAG Awards

Well we knew one thing right off the bat, as Avatar did not have a single nomination. In fact, of the top five contenders right now only three were up for Best Ensemble. After tonight it’s clear that the actors are behind Inglourious Basterds

Screen Actors Guild Awards Are Tonight

They’re going to be broadcast, starting at 4:30PM PST on both TBS and TNT. The SAGs can be kind of hard to predict and don’t always go in the same direction as the race to Oscar, so I’m not going to even try to predict them.

But, as always, I will be live-blogging them over at my tumblr: http://oldfilmsflicker.tumblr.com/ so head over there if you’re interested. After they’re over I’ll make a post similar to my Globes and Critics Choice posts, so you can look forward to that as well.

BAFTA Nominations Are In

There are a few odd things in this list, but keep in mind these are for Britain, so some films that are eligible for Oscar haven’t been released there yet.

The one thing that is certain is Jeremy Renner is closer now to being a lock for a Best Actor nomination by the Academy.

Reflections on the Golden Globes

As shocking (and for many, upsetting) as  Avatar‘s win over The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds is, it doesn’t mean it’ll take the top prize at the Oscars in March. It’ll be nom’d for sure, but that really is all that’s certain at this point.

What the Critics Choice Awards Mean to Oscar

In many ways the Critics Choice Awards are just as good, if not a better gauge of how the Oscars are going to go than the Golden Globes. Granted, there are no Academy members who vote for either of those award shows (unlike the guilds, where there are some crossover members with the Academy.)
