Movie Quote of the Day – The Mouse That Roared, 1959 (dir. Jack Arnold)

Prime Minster Count Rupert Mountjoy: We must declare war on the United States.
Benter: But we can never win such a war!
Prime Minster Count Rupert Mountjoy: Of course not, but we could win the peace. I’ve given this a lot of thought gentlemen and I’m perfectly positive that I am right. You must remember, the Americans are a very strange people. Whereas other countries rarely forgive anything, the Americans forgive anything. There isn’t a more profitable undertaking for any country than to declare war on the United States and to be defeated.

Gwen: OK, yes, I know, I’m nothing, I never was, but you! You could have been…
Eddie Anderson: What? What?!
Gwen: . . .What you could have been. . .What happened to you, Eddie? Must kill you to think what you might have been.

Bala: Why are you stalking me? Don’t you realize that I’m out of your league?
Z: You’re the one who was cruising the worker bar looking for a little action. And you just happened to find it. . .the swarthy, earthy, sensual worker.
Bala: Please. I was slumming it. Don’t you get it? I chose you because you were the most pathetic little bug in the joint.
Z: I was gonna let you become part of my most erotic fantasies. But now, you can forget that.

Jack Butler: Listen, Ace, we need to talk here about your woobie. Your woobie’s lookin’ bad, bud. Now wait a minute. Listen to me, I understand that you little guys start out with your woobies and you think they’re great… and they are, they are terrific. But pretty soon, a woobie isn’t enough. You’re out on the street trying to score an electric blanket, or maybe a quilt. And the next thing you know, you’re strung out on bedspreads Ken. That’s serious.

Bobby Drake: Sam, one thing you must understand, John is a poet. It’s taken me two months to discover it and therefore he loves his silence.
Cousin Sam: I’m not so sure he proves it.
Bobby Drake: That’s because he’s a moralist. You won’t get a straight answer from him. He’s storing up his opinions for another day. He’s also a dreamer. A seeker for the meaning of life with capital letters.

Waitress: Sorry, but the card didn’t go through. Do you have another card you want to try?
Frances: Oh, shit, sorry. Um, uhh this is a debit card.
Waitress: Only credit cards or cash.
Frances: Okay. I’m so embarrassed. I’m not a real person yet.

Elgar Winthrop Julius Enders: You know what NAACP means, don’t you?
Joyce Enders: You tell me what it means.
Elgar Winthrop Julius Enders: It means “Niggers Ain’t Always Colored People”!
William Enders Sr.: What did he mean by that?
Joyce Enders: He just called us niggers.
William Enders Sr.: Us?

August 2013 in Films: New Releases and Rarities

August was a crazy month. Lots of work and lots of viewing of things in theatres. In fact right now Cinecon 49 is going on and I am trying to finish this post quickly so I can see a Sunday Morning Western there, so forgive me if this post is rather brief. As always, a full list of the films I saw is after the cut, as well as a few highlights. Oh and one last thing, I got to meet Paul Schrader and David Lynch in August. I feel I’ve crossed into another realm of existence. Oh and this is my 1,800th post!

Doreen Piggot: Honey, yesterday I hit a kid.
Honey Bush: What?
Doreen Piggot: I hit an eight-year-old kid. He wasn’t hurt. I just kind of brushed him, knocked him down. But it was so close. He’s such a little sweetie too. I tried to give him a lift to his house. He told me his mom and dad told him never to get into the car with anybody unless they said it was okay.
Honey Bush: You’re very lucky, you know that?
Doreen Piggot: If I’d been going faster, I would’ve killed him. Imagine. How could you get over that? You couldn’t. I came home. I told Earl our whole life could change. Earl tells me to go on a diet. That’s all he could think of to say.

Milly Stephenson: Didn’t think you’d be up for hours.
Al Stephenson: You know, I had a dream. I dreamt I was home. I’ve had that same dream hundreds of times before. This time I wanted to find out if it’s really true. Am I really home?
Milly Stephenson: Looks like it.
