Avatar – The Matrix 2.0?
What I’m saying is Avatar is a special effects-driven film, like The Matrix, that is critically acclaimed and loved by audiences. Both films pushed boundaries of film visual effects and created new technologies.

She will join Academy President Tom Sherak to announce this year’s Oscar nominations on Feb. 2.
Avatar Surpasses Titanic at Worldwide Box Office
This is a big feat and it’s taken a film 12 years do it. It’s no surprise, really, that James Cameron would be at the helm of the movie that finally surpasses Titanic–his last film.
This number is only going to go up as Titanic got to this number through a re-release after it won Best Picture. I remember seeing it when it first came out in December 1997 or maybe January 1998 and then seeing it again for my birthday in June. I don’t really see a re-release of Avatar in its future. Although, it could be a possibility since there still isn’t a home release technology that can preserve the film’s 3D self.
For Your Consideration – The Hangover
I had this thought that perhaps The Hangover should win Best Picture at the Oscars this year.
What We Learn From the SAG Awards
Well we knew one thing right off the bat, as Avatar did not have a single nomination. In fact, of the top five contenders right now only three were up for Best Ensemble. After tonight it’s clear that the actors are behind Inglourious Basterds
An Education – An Edifying Coming-Of-Age Film
I finally got to see An Education and absolutely loved it. The one-sentence summary: 16 year-old Oxford- bound British Schoolgirl Jenny (Carey Mulligan) is wooed by the suave, and much older David (Peter Sarsgaard) in 1961 London.
BAFTA Nominations Are In
There are a few odd things in this list, but keep in mind these are for Britain, so some films that are eligible for Oscar haven’t been released there yet.
The one thing that is certain is Jeremy Renner is closer now to being a lock for a Best Actor nomination by the Academy.

The Hurt Locker – Can A Good Old-Fashioned War Movie Win Best Picture?
I finally got to see The Hurt Locker today. I absolutely loved it. I am a big fan of War films and I’d put this one up there with my favorites, namely The Thin Red Line and The Longest Day.
Although I’ve yet to see Avatar, I do not want it to win Best Picture. I know I should reserve judgement until I’ve seen it. But I do not see how it can be as good as either The Hurt Locker or Up In The Air. To quote Quentin Tarantino “This CGI bullshit is the death knell of cinema. If I’d wanted all that computer game bullshit, I’d have stuck my dick in a Nintendo.”

Reflections on the Golden Globes
As shocking (and for many, upsetting) as Avatar‘s win over The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds is, it doesn’t mean it’ll take the top prize at the Oscars in March. It’ll be nom’d for sure, but that really is all that’s certain at this point.
