The Hurt Locker – Can A Good Old-Fashioned War Movie Win Best Picture?

I finally got to see The Hurt Locker today. I absolutely loved it. I am a big fan of War films and I’d put this one up there with my favorites, namely The Thin Red Line and The Longest Day

Although I’ve yet to see Avatar, I do not want it to win Best Picture. I know I should reserve judgement until I’ve seen it. But I do not see how it can be as good as either The Hurt Locker or Up In The Air. To quote Quentin Tarantino “This CGI bullshit is the death knell of cinema. If I’d wanted all that computer game bullshit, I’d have stuck my dick in a Nintendo.”

20 Years of Best Supporting Actor nominees

This will conclude my posts featuring my favorite Academy Award nominated performances from the last 20 years. Just like my post dedicated to Best Actor nominees I couldn’t narrow it down to ten, so there are fifteen again. I guess I tend to like actors more than actresses. If you’re interested in buying any of the films discussed below, click here.

Reflections on the Golden Globes

As shocking (and for many, upsetting) as  Avatar‘s win over The Hurt Locker and Inglourious Basterds is, it doesn’t mean it’ll take the top prize at the Oscars in March. It’ll be nom’d for sure, but that really is all that’s certain at this point.

Polls! Polls! Polls! (take 2)

Unlike yesterday’s post, today I want to know how you think the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is going to vote. Who do you think WILL WIN the awards tonight?

I’ll post my predictions along with what my beloved readers think around 4 of 4:30 tonight, but then I have to hide from the internets because the awards ceremony is tape delayed and I’m on the West Coast and don’t want to get spoiled :/ THE SHOW IS NOT BEING TAPE DELAYED THIS YEAR. It’ll be shown simultaneously in the East Coast and the West Coast. This is wonderful news. I’ll be live-blogging the ceremony over on my tumblr: http://oldfilmsflicker.tumblr.com/ if you’re interested.

Polls after the cut.

Five Under-Appreciated Performances From 2009

At this point we’re pretty much set with the performances that will get nominated for the Oscars. There might be one or two surprise nominees – think Michael Shannon for Revolutionary Road last year – but other than that the nominees aren’t going to be much of a surprise.

I’d like to take a moment to discuss five performances that have been all but over looked this awards season. These are all performances that I loved instantly and are all featured in films I will probably return to again and again.

Polls! Polls! Polls!

With the Golden Globes coming up tomorrow I thought I’d throw out some polls and see what y’all think. Keep in mind what I want to know is what you think deserves to win, not necessarily what you think will win. Feel free to comment and explain your choices!

Polls after the cut.

20 years of Best Actor nominees

Much like my earlier post featuring my ten favorite performances nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars since 1989, I bring you my top performances nominated for Best Actor. However, there was no way I could limit this list to ten, even paring it down to fifteen was pretty hard. So here goes nothing. If you’re interested in buying any of the films listed below, click here.

What the Critics Choice Awards Mean to Oscar

In many ways the Critics Choice Awards are just as good, if not a better gauge of how the Oscars are going to go than the Golden Globes. Granted, there are no Academy members who vote for either of those award shows (unlike the guilds, where there are some crossover members with the Academy.)
