The American Society of Cinematographers names Amélie Best-Shot Film From 1998-2008
The ASC released the results of an online poll today and the quirky 2001 French film (and one of my Top-Ten Favorite Films of All Time!) topped the list.

Zero-Time Academy Award Nominees (part 2) – 20 of the Best Contemporary Actresses Who’ve Never Been Nom’d For Oscar
This list was a lot harder to come up with because most of the actresses I like/consider to be great at their craft are Oscar nominees or winners. I was thinking perhaps the reason there are less underrated actresses is because there are less great roles for actresses and thus less actresses are able to really shine. That being said I did come up with a list of 20 contemporary actresses who have never been nominated that I think have given at least one Oscar-worthy performance, if not filled their career with them.

I decided to do this list in alphabetic order, by last name. These are some 20 contemporary actors who have yet to be nominated for an Academy Award and who, in my opinion, deserve to be.
(500) Days of Summer and 9 Other Great Films the Academy Completely Ignored This Decade
I was really shocked that (500) Days of Summer was completely ignored by the Academy this year. It was on several critic’s top ten lists. It had won several critic awards for its screenplay. I really thought, at the very least, it would get nods for Original Screenplay and Editing (hello, that Expectations vs. Reality scene was fucking awesome). I even had it on my predictions for Best Picture.
Alas, this was not the case and was probably, for me, the biggest disappoint of Tuesday’s announcements. However, this is not the first time an amazing piece of cinema has gone completely un-lauded by the Academy. I’ve picked one film from each year of this past decade that also has zero Oscar nominations to its name.
A Salute To Soundtracks – 2009
I’m a big fan of soundtracks and scores and 2009 was full of some really wonderful ones. There were three soundtracks and four scores that I particularly loved.

Five Under-Appreciated Performances From 2009
At this point we’re pretty much set with the performances that will get nominated for the Oscars. There might be one or two surprise nominees – think Michael Shannon for Revolutionary Road last year – but other than that the nominees aren’t going to be much of a surprise.
I’d like to take a moment to discuss five performances that have been all but over looked this awards season. These are all performances that I loved instantly and are all featured in films I will probably return to again and again.
